Building a Strong Message: Start with Values

Shared Value
We all work as hard as can to do the best for our families and keep our kids safe.

Define the Problem
But when a gallon of milk costs over $3 and child care is unaffordable, even some of the hardest working parents I know can’t afford child care in their communities.

State our Position
That’s why we need to do more to help make child care more affordable for families. It is good for healthy brain development in kids and good for economy.

Remove Partisianship
It doesn’t matter who you are or where you live, we all know someone who has struggled to find affordable child care.
Talking Points
- Kansan families are struggling with the costs of child care. High quality, safe, affordable child care allows parents to continue working, encourages healthy development in young children, and helps families become stronger and more financially stable.
- The first five years are so important to healthy brain development in kids. We need to invest in early childhood education to make sure all Kansas kids get started on the right track.
- So many Kansas families are struggling as costs go up on everything from food to health care to child care. We must invest more in programs that make child care more affordable and more available in communities from Kansas City to Garden City.
- And we CANNOT cut corners or eliminate safeguards that keep our babies and toddlers safe. We must make sure our kids and grandkids have access to high quality, safe child care programs.
- When parents have to leave the workforce because they can afford or find child care, that is challenging for the entire family and extended family. Making sure families have affordable and accessible child care near their homes makes them more financially stable and independent.
- Kansans have invested in top notch K-12 schools and are committed to making sure our kids have the best opportunity to thrive. As a result, Kansas has some of the best public schools in the nation. But we don’t invest in the first five years - and they are so important. We must make high quality, safe child care more affordable for all Kansas families.

Imagine working 60 hours a week to provide for your family, missing out on school plays and sports games. You work from sunrise to sundown to ensure the best future for your children. That’s the reality for so many Kansans right now. Families should be able to afford childcare without missing out on the big moments.
