Statewide What will Sen. Roger Marshall Cut to “Save Medicare. Save Medicaid. Balance the budget?”Advocacy Coalition Calls for Veto of Bill that Threatens Constitutional Rights, Fails to Support Pregnant Kansans
TOPEKA – This week, Kansas Senator Roger Marshall told the Senate during a riveting speech about milk to: “Save Medicare. Save Medicaid. Balance the budget.” Simultaneously, Marshall is helping fast track a budget bill that will give massive tax giveaways to billionaires and corporations, dramatically increase the national debt and force billions in cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.
“Like many Republican politicians, Senator Marshall will say just about anything to rubber-stamp the disastrous plans of the Trump Administration and deceive the American people,” said Ashley All, President of Kansas Coalition for Common Sense. “Kansans want to know who Senator Marshall will hurt to give tax breaks to billionaires and his rich political donors. Will you cut healthcare for veterans? Will you cut rural schools? Will you eliminate support for Kansas farmers who feed the nation?”
Senator Marshall continues to play political games. For the past several weeks, Congress has been working on a budget bill that proposes significant cuts to Medicaid and Medicare – among other things – so they can give huge tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans.
“In Kansas under Sam Brownback, we saw what happens when politicians force an irresponsible tax experiment on the people,” said Ashley All. “Roger Marshall should know better than to risk another reckless tax experiment in Washington that will blow a hole in the budget, balloon the national debt, and hurt working people across the country.”
Last month, the House recommended $880 billion in cuts to crucial programs like Medicaid and Medicare. Now, the Senate has revealed its own budget plan that also includes massive cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, Veteran’s Services, and more, and will grow “the nation’s debt limit by $5 trillion” [AP, April 2, 2025].
The FACTS:
Marshall supports tax cuts for billionaires that will devastate Medicaid and Medicare:
Time and time again, Senator Marshall has voted for massive tax cuts for billionaires and the rich at the expense of middle class Americans. These votes have exploded the national debt and destabilized the very budget he says he wants to “balance.”
- In 2017, Congressman Roger Marshall supported the Tax Cut and Jobs Act, Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. This tax experiment drove up the national debt and destabilized the federal budget – putting Medicare and Medicaid at risk.
- This year, Marshall supported Trump’s high tariffs on imports, which would drive up costs for average people and crash the U.S. economy.
- In February, Marshall voted to pass a $340 billion budget framework that would cut $4.2 trillion in taxes for the wealthiest people in the country – and none for the middle class.
- This week, Marshall supported the Senate’s budget proposal to expand Trump’s 2017 tax experiment and cut “as much as $2 trillion from health care and other programs” and “boosts the nation’s debt limit by $5 trillion” [AP, April 2, 2025].
Marshall consistently votes to cut health care for Americans:
Repeatedly, Senator Marshall has voted or spoken out against Medicaid and Medicare. His opposition to Medicaid Expansion and opposition to Medicare negotiating drug prices directly impact the sustainability of both programs.
- In 2017, Marshall voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which protects healthcare, including Medicaid.
- In 2020, Marshall voted against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Enhancement Act, which would’ve expanded Medicare services for seniors.
- In 2022, he opposed the Inflation Reduction Act. This legislation helps reduce prescription drug costs for seniors and reduced costs for the Medicare program.
In Kansas alone, over 342,000 residents are insured through Medicaid and over 462,000 seniors utilize Medicare. Marshall says one thing, but votes another way. Kansans deserve better.
